Rovers went agonisingly close to promotion to the top-flight following a 23 year absence. Favourites Chelsea ran away with the league, whilst Don Mackay's exciting team pushed a faltering Manchester City all the way for the automatic 2nd spot. City's drop in form began with a 4-0 spanking by Rovers in April, though two costly away defeats in the final five-game run-in resulted in 5th position and the lottery of the play-offs. Blackburn had the winning ticket in the semi-final against Watford, winning on away goals after a 0-0 home draw and a 1-1 draw AET at Vicarage Road. The first leg of the final had the Ewood faithful in dreamland too, with a fine 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Heartbreak would inevitably follow after a controversial 3-0 defeat in the second leg. Close, but no cigar.
