Losing the love of your life is never easy and the Ewood faithful found things especially heartbreaking in the 1996-1997 season. It wasn't until November that Rovers registered their first win, by which time Ray Harford had lost his job. Jack Walker kept faith with trusted caretaker Tony Parkes until the end of the season and was repaid with Premiership survival with games to spare.

The good times returned in 1997-1998 following the arrival of Roy Hodgson from Inter Milan. Rejuvenated Rovers won four of their opening five matches, winning 4-0 at Aston Villa and 7-2 at home to Sheffield Wednesday. They were still genuine title contenders up until January before a dismal Spring. A last minute winner on the final day secured UEFA Cup football and sixth spot.
