Founder members of the Football League in 1888 and now founder members of the Premier League in 1992. Big-spending Blackburn went for bust following promotion. Uncle Jack's chequebook broke the British transfer record for 22 year old Alan Shearer. England's hot-shot prospect cost King Kenny Dalglish a cool £3.3m (rising to £3.6m). It quickly proved to be a cut-price bargain, scoring twice on debut, again on home debut and eventually amassing 16 goals in 21 league appearances (22 goals in 26 apps total) before a season-ending ACL injury on Boxing Day. Rovers were 2nd in the table at the time and well-placed to win the title at their first attempt. Following an inevitable dip in form without their new talisman, Rovers ultimately recovered their early-season form and finished fourth. Amazingly this wasn't enough to qualify for the Uefa Cup in a season that also saw Rovers go deep into both domestic cup competitions.
