This was the season of fantasy football at Ewood Park. The summer began with failed bids for Tottenham's Gary Lineker and Millwall's Teddy Sheringham. Rumour has it that the Spurs board laughed down the phone until they later realised that new Blackburn owner Jack Walker had the wealth to buy several Tottenham Hotspurs, never mind their star striker. By mid-October, Rovers had to make do with David Speedie and Mike Newell, and a new manager in the shape of Liverpool legend King Kenny Dalglish. By Christmas, the bookmakers had stopped taking bets on a Rovers return to the big-time. Then, in true Blackburnian style, Newell got injured and the wheels fell off. Scraping into the play-offs ended in two epic clashes with Derby and a narrow 1-0 over Leicester City at Wembley. After 26 years, Blackburn were back in the big time.
